Gracie Jaime, Junior Class Vice President 2019-2020
The Initial Letter
As I enter my second to last year of high school, I have high hopes for what the future holds. With the workload that is going to come from my AP classes, I will enjoy these moments of being an upperclassman. The most important factor this school year is to also maintain my mental health. A quote I will look back on is, “the life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress, is the easiest type of existence.” By making sure tasks are done without stress is what I strive for. I also hope that I can create this same feeling for all the students at RHS. Some of my best friends, who I’ve met through leadership, will help me make sure this is a priority. I expect to dedicate my time to making my school accepting to everyone. I hope to create a save haevn to students because I understand the social stigma of high school. In the beginning of my freshmen year, I felt lost due to the rush of high school. I felt like a fish in a big pond and didn’t feel important to my environment. By joining leadership my freshman year, it helped me establish myself in High School. The insight it has given me is making me a better version of myself. Without being in leadership, I wouldnt understand the importance of creating a positive environment for others and how to leave my legacy on the world. The skills I have retained also make me confident for the future. By counting my legacy through Leadership, I want to leave my mark on the school. I believe the best way to retain knowledge is by passing it forward. My ultimate goal for the rest of my time in leadership is to provide my best to the student body. My initial thought is to help others find their purpose. This purpose can be for the rest of their life or be temporary. I want to make others feel a need to come to school everyday, knowing the environment is inclusive to everyone. I would like to end this letter with my own motto. I will stay true to myself, I will fulfill my duties with the student body and leadership, I will also become a role model and a friendly face to others. I hope to make a positive difference this year.
Part I: Favorite Quotes
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”-George Bernard
The progress that comes from others, starts with the mindset that they have. Mindset plays a big role in order for someone to take action. This quote relates to me and my opinions on the sustainability of our current time period. Climate change is a big issue right now and many people have a fixed mindset. They don’t want to believe the concerns. This can also be applied to leadership. If you don’t have a positive mindset for the tasks of leadership, how can you succeeded?
“What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven’t happened yet.”-Unknown
I often think to myself and say, is what I’m doing in my life right now truly making me happy? Is my happiness just an illusion, and something I want to believe is happiness? I wonder if my future days will be worthwhile compared to my life now? I would like to think my peers feel the same way. Is all the studying for the AP classes truly going to give you happiness? My goal is to stay optimistic through the worst times.
“Someday you’ll look back and understand why it all happened the way it did.”-Unknown
In some instances, I think, am I making the right decision? Will my outcome be the one I want it to be? I know that all my life lessons won’t come easily, so that is why I try to understand them so deeply. In the moment, I may not understand why my life can shift so swiftly. The best thing I can do is live with the feeling of having prosperity. By being confident, it will help me live more happily. Everything happens for a reason and I hope I can look back on my past with acceptance.

Part II: Quote
Stay positive, work hard, make it happen.-Unknown
This quote means no matter what the duty you should fulfill be, do it with a positive mindset. You don’t choose your duties but you can choose your mindset towards them. By fulfilling your duties to your best ability, your not only feeling accomplished but also showing your work ethic. This quote can impact future students in the program by informing them the work that comes. At times, everyone has their moments where they feel defeated and don’t want to try. This quote gives reassurance that hard work pays off in the end. Everyone in leadership needs motivation from these uplifting quotes. The quote is important because it relates to everyone's everyday duties. Everyone in the world has to work for a purpose, this being for money, fame, or family. The reflection is important because if we have a class of positive mindsetted people completing their jobs, the class will succeed. Part I: Goals
Goals for leadership:
My first goal for leadership is to take on my role and work to my best ability. My position is the Vice President of the Junior class. My job this year requires to take on a bigger role and fill in for the president. I need to be on top of my work and be organized. Time management is essential this school year. Another goal for leadership is to become closer with my classmates. Since we are not in a classroom and don’t have assigned seating, we tend to sit next to our friends.
Short term goals:
My short term goal is to maintain a 3.5 or higher gpa. This is something that I know I am capable of doing. My grades and my work ethic have been great thus far. Another short term goal is to get a decent amount of sleep each night. I only get about seven hours of sleep but I need about nine hours to be energized. This starts with starting my homework earlier and not getting distracted by my phone. Also, talking and hanging out with others is important socially, but it’s a distraction to my homework.
Long term goals:
My long term goal is to work for the United Nations. Ever since I went to the conference they conducted, I have been nothing but inspired to work for them. I feel like this is my calling and is what I’m supposed to do. My other long term goal is to leave a legacy through others. I want to be remembered for the impact I have made. This impact doesn’t have to be big, but I want it to be worthy. An example of this is to create an organization that funds the victims of the Syrian War. Hopefully my career choices will lead me down the road to complete this impactful goal.
Part II: Goals
My first goal for leadership was to work to my best ability. I feel that I have fulfilled this goal and I’m still striving for this. I will be striving for this goal till the end of the 2019-2020 school year. My other goal for leadership was making as many memories with my classmates. This goal I’m the most proud of. I have grown closer with many new people and made many memories with the class as a whole. To the time of the tri-tip drive through dinner, to poster making for different events, and to the cart making for winterfest. The memories are not always the happiest but they have made me grow as an individual. Next, my short term goal was to get at least nine hours of sleep. I tried to go to bed early most nights. I didn’t get nine hours every night but I was pretty close. My other short term goal was to keep a 3.5 gpa. I have completed this goal with having a 3.8 gpa. I am very proud of myself that I was able to achieve this goal and also maintain my social life. My long term goal is to work for the United Nations. I went to a UN seminar last year but wasn’t able to go this year. I am a member and get weekly emails but I should be able to attend the seminar next year. Lastly, my final long term goal is to benefit the world in some way. I either want to help people in developing countries, develop a solution to help our oceans, or maybe become an activist and aware people. This has always been a goal for me and I will do it.

Coming from a mixed family, her races are Mexican and Caucasian. Gracie Jaime stated, “I remember when I was a little kid that I would tell people I was Mexican. Some people don’t care at all but I do. I feel I can’t just sit back and watch our planet get damaged. We need this planet for future generations.” Gracie has been to a youth assembly conducted about different world factors. She learned more about solutions and felt the United Nations was her true calling. Gracie has also been open to voicing what she is passionate about. She recently protested about climate change. Part I: Homecoming activities
Part II: Homecoming activities continued
Part I: What I like best about being a member of leadership
One of my favorite moments in leadership was decorating the football field for homecoming. It was quite stressful at the time since were very limited on time. I just remember running back and forth across the field yelling at Gabriel to put something up. My favorite part was when Brendan and I were in the announcers booth and I was calling out to Morty. She wasn’t too impressed but I was just trying to serenade her. Another one of my favorite moments in leadership was the tri-tip dinner. I had fun dancing to music while prepping the meals. This moment was also stressful because we thought we were low on tri-tip but had the exact amount. I really enjoyed the music playing and people talking about some petty drama. I always enjoy this day. Lastly, my favorite moment was decorating the cart for winter fest. The juniors and I decorated at my house. Yes, we may have waited until the last minute but we came through and won the contest. The best part about building the cart was how all of us were signing “Tonight” by Fun. I will cherish this nostalgic moment that we all shared. It is incredible how we could all bond by singing just one song!
Part II: Reflection of a Peer
Gabriel Herrera has been my friend since the beginning of freshmen year. Through these past three years in leadership, I have noticed his amazing leadership skills. He has always been innovative and a perfectionist. I admired these qualities because he was all about coming up with fresh ideas. Gabriel will always perfect the little details in things, which makes him very hardworking. Other than these skills, he is very outgoing. Gabriel is a friendly face and many people gravitate to his quirky personality. His confidence makes up everything he does and it is what makes him unique. I have never met someone who qualifies many components of being a leader. I’m excited to see what amazing ideas Gabriel has for the future.

Role Model
Kate Villegas is an amazing person who has entered my life. With her being my best friend, I have observed all the great qualities that she has. Kate has made me be the best version of myself and she has taught me to embrace who I am. She is never afraid to be herself and is the friendliest person I know. She knows how to put a smile on everyone’s face. Kate’s work ethic has also inspired me to put in that extra effort. She is a go-getter who will always stick to her values. Kate is passionate in what she believes in and sticks with her opinions. I thank God for putting an amazing woman like her in my life.

Inner Animal
I feel that a Blue Tongue Skink best describes my personality. They are well known for the blue color that is their tongue. This makes them stand out from others but it doesn’t define the type of lizard they are. Skinks are known for being very friendly and intelligent, which I possess both of these qualities. They may come off as being nervous, but they are very calm creatures. I noticed that I always look worried and only about 50% of the time I actually am. We are both just very cautious, which is a good quality. They are the most affectionate, which can relate to how I care for others. I always make sure to show my appreciation to people I truly care about. They make a great pet just like I make a good friend. :)

PART I: THE BEST THINGS ABOUT ME
PART II: THE BEST THINGS ABOUT ME
PART I: WHAT I LOVE TO DO...
My hobbies consist of movements that are bigger than me. I’m all about moving forward in what I’m passionate about. You can catch me at a protest, working in a local youth group or promoting human rights. These hobbies of mine bring me joy and I am never left unsatisfied. I always try to stick to my values and what I believe in. The impact that I leave only has an affect on others around me. Many of my peers have started to participate in similar hobbies. I’m happy to have some of my best friends by my side while we enjoy making a difference. I hope I can continue doing these activities in the future. They only benefit me and bring me happiness. These are a few of my favorite things.
Part II: Letter to Parents
Dear mom and dad,
I know I don’t say this enough but I would like to thank you for everything. I’ve been blessed with a great life from two dedicated parents. I have been motivated everyday knowing that my parents are by my side. I always strive for the best so I can make you proud. Two of my greatest role models who I can go to for anything. I know my anxiety can be crazy at times but thank you for understanding. By expressing my problems to you, I have never felt more safe. Thank you for keeping up with my meltdowns in the mornings, being my uber, and for paying for my outrageous lunches, according to dad! I know many times I can snap at both of you, but I’m just being a dumb teenager. My teenage years are most likely the worst years of my life, so bare with me. Mom I would like to tell you, thank you for being my best friend. You are a hardworking and the overall greatest woman I know. Thank you for showing me “Vanderpump” and of course “Cruel Intentions.” You inspire me to go for my goals and you made me the compassionate person I am today. Dad, thank you for making me strive for my best. Your quirky personality and dedicated mindset has made you the best padre. Your variety in music and your knowledge in “60 minutes” has educated me in one way or another. I would like to conclude this letter with a quote, “anyone can have a child and call themselves a parent. A real parent is someone who puts that child above their own selfish needs and wants.” I feel this quote defines you two because you dedicated your life to me. One day when I have my own kids, hopefully I can give my children the same love and support that you gave me. Thank you for everything.
With much love,
Gracie.

Your True Legacy, General Advice Letter
Dear upcoming Junior Class Vice President,
This position has brought me diligence and challenges that I had to overcome. Being second in command is very important. You are the right hand man to the president, supporting his decisions. You have to delegate when the president is absent. It is a big responsibility but has taught me to be conscientious and attentive. In the beginning, assimilating into the position was different to me. Establishing a position that was higher in ranking was an adjustment. You have to establish to the other members what you expect from them and what they can expect from you. In the beginning of the year, I wish I would've known how to manage my officers within my position. It is difficult having to work with your friends and having to bestow something that they need to improve on. During homecoming, one of my officers was barely helping with the float due to excused reasoning. It was tiring always hearing this same excuse and the president and I could have handled it better. Within this position, and we'll all positions in leadership, you have to maintain professionalism. Confrontation is necessary but only in a professional manner. No shouting or blaming, instead coming to a resolution. That is where I failed in my position, not changing the unprofessionalism within my team. Some recommendations I can give are never expect the president to come to you with decisions. You always need to know what is going on and check with your president accordingly. Also, check on your other team members and guide them on anything they need help with. Being attentive with everyone is the key to this position. Also, be aware of notifying Morty of any new ideas within your class even if the president is present. Morty likes to check on the vice presidents and get an understanding of what they are doing. Don't always expect to manage just when the president is absent. This job may seem intimidating but anyone can get the job done if you put in the diligence and management in it.

The Professional
Professional learning is one of the main subjects we talk about in leadership. Professional learning is used in our everyday duties. From writing formal thank you cards to signing a budget on file. One aspect that I would like to talk about is the mock interview component. Due to COVID-19, the interview with selected individuals will not be happening. On the other note, we were still able to prepare for this. We had lessons on making resumes and cover letters, then we had to make our own. With this being my third year in leadership, it can get a little repetitive. Even though some of it may be, the current trend is always changing on resumes and cover letters. By having access to the internet, you can send your resume and cover letter digitally. Depending on the job you are applying for, there may be different layout requirements you should have. For example, with tech companies, you may want to keep your resume more modern looking and maybe add a picture. It all depends on the profession you are interested in. The layouts may always be changing but the purpose of a resume will not. Another aspect was the formal ASB meetings. These meetings consisted of approving the purchase of items, new ideas, and documenting motions. You have to dress professionally for these meetings. You also have to write a report with a certain layout. Everyone is not obligated to share their report but you may if people are absent.
Change
The overall 2019-2020 school year has changed me, significantly. It may have not ended on the best of terms. I didn’t think school would quit on me, thanks COVID-19. On another note my work ethic has changed and this has made my work successful. I have also learned many new professional skills that will only benefit me in the future. The memories will also stick with me forever and it makes me happy that I could share them with great people. This school year has also made me grow from my mistakes. During homecoming, the junior officers and I had a falling out. The communication and effort was lacking from all of us. The situation turned bad really fast and we all got into a fight. The maturity level wasn’t there and that is something that I look back on. It could've been handled in a professional manner. A change that I would like to see with the class is treating the leadership events like a priority. For example, setting up and cleaning up for dances is expected. Some people still get out of it. I think that everyone needs to start giving their input when we are planning and putting on events. I get that some excuses are valid but that is why time management is key. We also need to stick to our core goals. It is hard to follow the principles all the time but to reflect on them is key. It makes the leadership class more efficient and it makes us closer in the end. I will definitely miss how close our class was this year but I’m glad to make new memories for the following year. This next school year will be a strong class and I can’t wait for the memories I get to make with new people. It will also be a very fun senior year!
The Ideal Leader
“Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example”
An ideal leader is someone who is willing to put in the effort not for one’s self, but for the sake of others. They are leading for a purpose and not only for one’s success. They truly want to make a difference with their environment, career, ambitions, etc. This is a broad example that could be applied to anyone. In the leadership classroom, students should be expected to lead. It’s one of the key factors of the program. A student should create more leaders in their environments. In regards to class activities, they should have a good attendance and are engaged in the topics being discussed. Students should be an active participant and only be focusing on the prompt of the class. Completing homework for this class is an essential. The homework that is assigned is related character work or coloring. If not assigned, majority of the homework is completing something for an event. When planning events, students should make sure to carefully plan with the time frame they have. If time is used efficiently, then the students should be prepared and the event should be a success. Also, all leadership students should attend all the leadership events even if they weren’t specifically in charge of it. This shows the level of teamwork and involvement of the students. An acceptable attitude for the class is wanting to be apart of the course. You have to show and make an effort in order to succeed in the class. This class will show you true integrity and character.
